REPLACING DEPTH OF FIELD

Changing our lens, aperture, and distance from the subject are all factors that allow the depth of field to expand and contract. In addition, changing the point where we focus in the frame also allows to change the location of the clear depth of field. We can make the front, middle or back clear in the frame.

The shops of the covered bazaar surrounding the Imam Square in the city of Isfahan in Iran welcome many people throughout the day. Those who go from shop to shop for shopping examine almost every window, look at the products and compare the prices. During this shopping, when I saw the woman carefully examining a necklace she wanted to buy, I decided that she should have the clarity. However, in such a photo, it would be a better choice to use a limited depth of field, since the foreground is also clear, which will cause the frame to be very complex.

I quickly made the choice of telephoto lens, open aperture and close-up to limit the depth of field. The next thing was to ensure that this limited depth of field was in the area I wanted in the frame. For this purpose, I used the Single Point option, which will allow the Auto Focus system to focus on a single point. With the right – left, up – down arrows on the right side of the LCD screen, I made sure that the point to be sharpened was on the woman. Thus, I ensured that the depth of field, which I limited with the lens, aperture and distance, was effective in the part of the frame I wanted.

Choosing the focus point by the photographer is an important choice as it means deciding which area or subject will be clear in the frame.
