ELEPHANT VILLAGE – JAIPUR / INDIA

Jaipur – India / March 2017

As many photography volunteers know, photographs of people and portraits are the most commonly taken subjects during trips to countries such as India and Nepal. In this confusion, many elements other than the person photographed and the relevant subject, if any, enter the frame and distract attention. For this reason, frames created by removing the environment will achieve more successful results.

It is possible to simplify the framing by changing the viewing height (for example, looking from the bottom up), leaving the background blank (for example, using the sky), leaving only 2 relevant elements in the frame (man and elephant).

Other technical choices were the choice of a lens to extract the surrounding elements, the use of an open diaphragm, the measurement of light from the man’s face, and the correct formation of tones with minus (-) exposure.

After determining the shooting angle that would leave the elephant and its caretaker in the frame, I waited for a moment to add dynamism to the photo and completed the shooting by pressing the shutter button when the elephant’s trunk was up.
